But mum, what is it?

A 13-metre (42ft) statue that draws on the legacies of Queen Victoria, the British empire and the transatlantic slave trade could help trigger a radical reassessment of public monuments in Britain, according to its curator.

Kara Walker’s Fons Americanus fountain, which opened to the public on Wednesday 2 October and is the latest Turbine Hall commission at Tate Modern, was inspired by the Queen Victoria memorial outside Buckingham Palace.

I am guessing this installation is supposed to be uncomfortable and I believe it is. But probably for other reasons.

This has to be the first installation in the Turbine Hall I have not liked.

It tries to be provocative and thought provoking but it feels like a large GCSE Art pottery project.

I’m pleased however with this interesting shot of mother and son enjoyong the fountain.
